How to grow bonsai – tips from nature

By Ruth Morgan

There is no better place to get inspiration for shaping and styling bonsai trees than to take a walk in the great outdoors. Look at the trees – study their shape and form.

Observe the roots, trunk, branches and foliage. See the effect of the elements e.g. can you tell what is the prevailing wind direction from the shape of the tree?

Take some notes, photos, videos to record what you see and then ask yourself – can I replicate that in my bonsai? You’ll be surprised what you see when you keep your eyes open!

In this video you’ll see several different styles of trees that have been translated into bonsai styles. And these are just a few of the many different styles of bonsai.

Let me give you a challenge – go for a 30 minute walk in the country or local park and see how many styles you can identify. Then apply just one idea to your own bonsai.

Styling bonsai trees doesn’t have to be complicated – just follow nature!
